University of Minnesota Cancer Center
As one of only 39 comprehensive cancer centers in the U. S. designated by the National Cancer Institute, the University of Minnesota Cancer Center strives to advance the understanding of cancer and enhance treatment for patients.
Advancing knowledge and enhancing care is the mission of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center. The Cancer Center fosters this mission by creating a collaborative research environment focused on the causes, prevention, detection and treatment of cancer; applying that knowledge to improve quality of life for patients and survivors; and sharing its discoveries with other scientists, students, professionals and the community.
Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation
The Minnesota Pancreas and Liver Center works closely with the Diabetes Institute because one of the adverse effects of removing the pancreas is the likelihood of developing diabetes.
The University of Minnesota is world-renowned as a pioneer of organ transplantation, from deceased human donors and living-donors alike. This reputation lies at the heart of successful pancreas transplantation, pioneered here in 1966 and successful islet transplantation pioneered here in 1974. University of Minnesota Medical School capitalized upon its historic strengths in pancreas and islet transplantation by establishing the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation (DIIT) to pursue a cure for diabetes.
The Transplant Center
The University of Minnesota transplant program's commitment to helping people live longer, healthier lives began in 1963, when its first kidney transplant was performed. The University’s transplant program quickly became known as the place willing and able to take on difficult, complex cases – including high-risk, extremely young and older recipients.
Whether you are a patient awaiting transplantation, a living donor or a transplant recipient, the expertise of University of Minnesota Physicians and supporting resources are available in a single location to dramatically improve patient care. The Transplant Center has performed more than ten thousand transplants, with excellent success rates in every program.
